US Open 2019

US Open 2019 Final Day

American Gary Woodland held off the challenge of world number one Brooks Koepka to claim his first major victory at the 119th US Open at Pebble Beach. The world number 25 shot a two-under 69 to win by three on 13 under from two-time defending champion Koepka. "It was special. I never thought the tournament was over," said Woodland. England's Justin Rose took a share of the lead with a birdie on the first hole on Sunday, but fell away with a 74 to finish on seven under par. The 38-year-old world number four, aiming to win the second major of his career after his 2013 US Open success, carded five bogeys as he finished tied for third with Spain's Jon Rahm and Americans Xander Schauffele and Chez Reavie. Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy endured a turbulent final day that included double bogeys at the second and 16th, but finished with a birdie to climb inside the top 10 at five under.

US Open 2019 Day 1 Review

Justin Rose finished with three successive birdies to hold a one-shot first-round lead at the US Open.

Four players are tied for second, with Americans Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele and Aaron Wise alongside South Africa's Louis Oostuizen. Rory McIlroy is on three under with Brooks Koepka a shot back and three-time champion Tiger Woods on one under.

World number one Koepka is trying to become the second man to win three successive US Open titles - after Scotland's Willie Anderson (1903-05) - and got his defence off to a lightning start with four birdies in his opening six holes to move within one stroke of the early clubhouse leaders. He then bogeyed the 8th and had problems with his driver off the tee, bogeying the 17th and finishing 2 under.

US Open 2019 preview

While Brooks Koepka is this week seeking a third consecutive US Open title most intrigue at Pebble Beach is likely to be generated by the man he recently deposed as world number one. That's because Dustin Johnson has serious history with this iconic venue and the championship it stages this week. While the US Open supplies his only major title, it has also provided a whole load of heartache. If the sporting cards had fallen differently, we could easily have been discussing 'DJ' going for a fourth title in five years, with a tied-second, a third and a tied-fourth to add to his victory in 2016. It was at this iconic California venue where this trend of under-achievement began. Back in 2010, the last time the championship was staged on the spectacular Monterey Peninsula course, Johnson was firmly in charge. Then a callow 25-year-old, he shot 71, 70 and 66 to open a three-stroke lead over Graeme McDowell - but the advantage vanished with a triple-bogey seven on the second hole of the final round.

Rory McIlroy is also on a winning streak after his terrific result in the Canadian Open last week. After shoooting a 61 (nearly a 59) and finishing in the top 10 on numerous tournaments this year he is surely worth a punt. Can he pull it off and win on a course which should suit him, or will he blow up on the last day as he has in the past.

Fifteen-time major champion Tiger Woods says he hopes he has another "10 years" to win majors ahead of the US Open at Pebble Beach "Hypothetically if I give myself another 10 years that's 40 majors," Woods said on Tuesday. "The trick is can I keep myself healthy and strong enough considering what my body has been through? "That's where I need help with all my trainers and physios and workout regimes, and hopefully I can make that happen." Tiger Woods who had spinal fusion surgery in 2017 and has had four back surgeries in his career, still has Jack Nicklaus's record haul of 18 majors in his sights. "This week I feel like I'm trending in the right direction. I need one more day of prep. I want to see the golf course when it's a little bit closer to game time."
