US PGA Championship 2019

US PGA - Day 4 Review

Brooks Koepka holds off Dustin Johnson to retain his US PGA Championship title and win a fourth major on a dramatic day at Bethpage. Koepka, who led from start to finish, has now won four majors in his previous eight starts - only legends Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods can match or better that record.

Koepka set the lowest 36-hole score in majors to take a seven-shot lead going into the final round. However, on Sunday's back nine his driving was erratic and his approach play and putting wobbled. Johnson, who holed three birdies on the front nine, closed within oneof Koepka with a birdie on the 15th. However, he then handed the advantage back to Koepka with bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes leaving him runner-up at each of golf's four men's majors. It was a nervy finish for Koepka, who also bogeyed the 17th for a two-shot lead with one to play. He then hit his tee shot into a fairway bunker on the last. But with a good recovery onto the fairway and a chip on to the green helped him finish with a par to win the Wanamaker Trophy.

Wallace was the shining light for Europe and finished 3rd. Although McIlroy and Lowry shone over the course of the weekend with successive under-par rounds, Wallace was the only genuine European contender down the final nine holes.

US PGA - Day 3 Review

Brooks Koepka ends the 3rd day still on 12 under. Not such a confident round as the previous 2 days but he showed coolness under pressure from the course itself. A number made a charge including List but they all feel back a little.

Dustin Johnson (69) is among four tied for second while Jordan Spieth (72) slipped to three under. England's Matt Wallace shot a 70 and is the leading European on four under. Wallace is the only European in the top 14 on the leaderboard after fellow Englishmen Justin Rose (73) and Tommy Fleetwood (72) went backwards at Bethpage's Black Course in New York state.

Koepka is chasing a fourth major victory in his last eight starts, and the 29-year-old can become the first player to hold back-to-back titles in two majors at the same time following his US Open wins in 2017 and 2018.

US PGA - Day 2 review

Brooks Koepka extends lead to 7, as Tiger Woods misses cut.

Koepka the defending champion leads by a tournament record seven shots on -12, after a five-under 65 in round two. Woods missed a sixth cut in his past 11 majors on five over. Jordan Spieth (66) is joint second with Adam Scott (64) on five under, while England's Matt Wallace is a shot back. Wallace had a run of six birdies in seven holes to put himself at six under but successive bogeys on the seventh and eighth, his 16th and 17th holes, meant he slipped to join a group on four under following a second-round 67. Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, who was among the early starters, posted an improved 71, helped by four birdies on his back nine, but he had an anxious wait to see if his three over par was good enough to make the cut. The cut mark eventually came at four over, meaning Woods missed out by one shot. "I made too many mistakes and didn't do the little things I needed to do," said Woods. "I did a lot of little things wrong. "I've enjoyed being the Masters champion again and the PGA was a quick turnaround. Unfortunately I just didn't play well."

US PGA - Day 1 review

Brooks Koepka tore the course apart on day 1 with a stunning 63 to lead the first round.

The American, playing with Tiger Woods, carded seven birdies to sit a shot ahead of world number 119 Danny Lee. England's Tommy Fleetwood (67) is third on three under, while Woods, chasing a 16th major, finished on two over. Northern Ireland's Rory McIlory holed his only birdie on 18 to match Woods. But it was an otherwise laboured round for the 30-year-old, who won the 2012 and 2014 tournament when it was the fourth and final major of the year in August - this is the first year it has switched to the second. "I'd give myself A for effort," said McIlroy said. "I dug in well. I hit the ball well and felt like I hit good putts, they were just sneaking by and trying to find a way not to go in. "I said going up to the 18th tee I can't remember the last time I played a round of golf without a birdie so I better birdie this last hole and thankfully I did. "Hopefully that was the turning point. Finish on a positive note, come back on Friday and hopefully get into red figures for the tournament."

US PGA Championship 2019 preview

The 2019 PGA Championship is the forthcoming 101st edition of the PGA Championship, and the second of golf's four major championships in 2019, held between May 16 and 19 at the Black Course in Bethpage State Park, Farmingdale, New York. This will be the first edition under the new golfing calendar, which results in PGA Championship moving from being the fourth major of the year played in August (when it has been played since the 1970s) to being the second major of the year played in May. It will be the first time Bethpage Black hosts the PGA Championship, although it hosted the U.S. Open in 2002 and 2009, won by Tiger Woods and Lucas Glover, respectively.

Masters winner Tiger Woods will open his US PGA Championship campaign on Thursday alongside defending champion Brooks Koepka and Open champion Francesco Molinari. The trio will head out together at 13:24 BST on Thursday for their first round at Bethpage Black in New York. Woods, 43, won at Augusta in April to end an 11-year wait for a 15th major. World number one Dustin Johnson will play alongside Spain's Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth at 18:16. England's world number two Justin Rose is in a threeball with Americans Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler (13:02), while four-time major winner Rory McIlroy plays with 2005 champion Phil Mickelson and 2015 winner Jason Day (18:38).
